Los poetas a los presidentes de América
Estimados señores:
La poesía es vida, imaginación, libertad, sentido estético de la existencia. Ella, nos guía por senderos diversos, ayudándonos a concebir nuestros anhelos más profundos y a concretar nuestro más alto sentir espiritual.
La poesía es palabra encarnada, se nutre de la hermandad de los hombres y las mujeres de este continente, rico en recursos de toda índole, en el que, no obstante, millones de sus habitantes padecen la injusticia, el hambre y la enfermedad.
La poesía abomina la muerte, las flores cegadas, los campos arrasados. Descree del lenguaje de las armas, no confía en las políticas económicas, sociales y culturales de las instituciones transnacionales. Rechaza la imposición de conductas y costumbres que realiza el fuerte y poderoso sobre los más débiles.
La poesía, en esta ocasión, les solicita a los presidentes aquí reunidos en este encuentro cumbre: que redoblen sus esfuerzos por la paz en el continente y en el mundo, que asistidos por la historia y la comprensión humana establezcan los lazos fraternales y de cooperación real y efectiva entre los pueblos del continente. La cooperación es imprescindible para el desarrollo, éste, es fundamental para la paz.
La poesía les pide asimismo, desde su más bellos ejemplos, una prueba de que creen en ella, les ruega en nombre de los pueblos del continente que rechacen toda aventura militar y todo pedido de inmunidad o status diferencial solicitado por cualquier gobierno del mundo para los integrantes de sus fuerzas armadas.

Letter from the Poets for Peace and Development
to the Presidents of the Americas
Dear Sirs,
Poetry is life, imagination, freedom, the aesthetic sense of existence. It guides us along diverse roads helping us conceive our deepest yearnings and fulfill our highest spiritual needs.
Poetry is word incarnate, nourished by the fraternity of the men and women of this continent, rich in resources of all kinds, where, however, millions suffer injustice, hunger and disease.
Poetry loathes death, shattered flowers, devastated fields. It does not believe in the language of weapons; it does not trust in the economic, social or cultural policies of transnational institutions. It rejects the imposition of behaviors and customs by the strong and powerful on the weaker.
On this occasion, Poetry requests that the presidents gathered at this summit meeting redouble their efforts to achieve peace in the continent and in the whole world, and that, assisted by history and human understanding, they build links of brotherhood and genuine and effective cooperation between the peoples of the continent. Cooperation is essential for development and essential for peace.
In the name of its most beautiful samples, Poetry asks of you a proof that you believe in it, and pleads with you, on behalf of the peoples of the Americas, to reject any military enterprise and any request for immunity or differential status from any government in the world for the members of their armed forces.
